Pen and ink - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most fountain pens and ballpoint pens are often regarded by many artists as being insensitive instruments or even not for true pen and ink work, but they are often useful for sketching in conditions in which a pot of ink would be a spill hazard.
Later English artists developed the pen and ink drawing into a finished artform, probably the finest examples of which are the 1825 series of visionary landscape drawings by Samuel Palmer.
In the Georgian and early Victorian periods in England, pen and ink was mostly used for quick sketches, often with a high degree of abstraction.

To make a lithograph, artists begin by drawing on the stone with a greasy lithographer's crayon or tusche, which also comes in liquid form and may be brushed on like ink or applied with a pen.
Traditionally, a print is any impression onto a piece of paper made by ink applied to a plate, a slab, a block, or a stencil that in some form holds an image.
After ink is applied to a relief block with a roller, the impression is made with light pressure on the back of the paper that has been laid over the block.

The wood blocks are inked by a roller the deposits a coating of ink on the raised surfaces; this in turn is deposited upon the paper by vertical pressure.
The print made by pressing paper against the inked drawing is not a reproduction in the same sense as is the mechanically reproduction print, but it is a true autographic replica, in reverse, of the original drawing on stone.

As the press bed carrying the stone passes beneath the scraper bar, the paper is pressed onto the stone, transferring the ink from the stone onto the paper.
Once the stone is moved onto the “press bed” of the printing press, the black ink image is removed with solvent and an ink stain of the color to be printed is applied.
The stone is rolled with ink several times and the paper chosen for the edition (100% acid-free rag paper is preferred) is carefully placed onto the stone, in line with the registration marks.

 Indian Ink - MyBindi.com
Indian Ink premiered in London in 1995 and had its North American premiere in San Francisco in 1999.
Indian Ink is set in 1930's India, where the English poet, Flora Crewe (Fiona Reid) befriends a widowed painter, Nirad Das (Sanjay Talwar).
To be fair, several stereotypes were also at play with the English characters in Indian Ink: Flora Crewe parodies the carefree, hedonistic "flapper" of the 30's, making mockery of the drinking and debauchery associated with the literary talents of the time.

Many of the great masters have used pen and ink, some favouring the reed pen, others the quill-pen and, when it became available, the dipping pen with a steel-nib has been used by artists.
In these pens the ink flow is controlled by a tip of felt or a bundle of nylon fibres in place of the conventional nib.
This pen succeeded the quill as a writing instrument in the later 19th century and soon replaced the quill as a favoured drawing instrument.
