Titian's friend Aretino died suddenly in 1556, and another close intimate, the sculptor and architect Jacopo Sansovino, in 1570.
Fontanas engraving, and a sketch by Titian himself in the gallery of the Uffizi in Florence, record the energetic composition.
Titian had a favorite villa on the neighboring Manza Hill, from which (it may be inferred) he made his chief observations of landscape form and effect.

 Biography
Titian, however, was lavish in his hospitality towards his friends, who included the poet Pietro Aretino and the sculptor and architect Jacopo Sansovino.
Titian was recognized as a towering genius in his own time (Lomazzo described him as the 'sun amidst small stars not only among the Italians but all the painters of the world') and his reputation as one of the giants of art has never been seriously questioned.
Titian referred to these pictures as 'poesie', and they are indeed highly poetic visions of distant worlds, quite different from the sensual realities of his earlier mythological paintings.

 Titian: Biography of Titian
TITIAN, OR TIZIANO, VECELLI, the head of the Venetian school, and one of the greatest painters that ever lived, was born of a good family, at Capo del Cadore, in the Frulian Alps, in the year 1477, or according to some in 1480.
The first work that brought Titian prominently into notice was his completion of the "Homage of Frederick Barbarossa to Pope Alexander III." (1512), begun by Giovanni Bellini, but left unfinished by that artist at his death.
His predilection for drawing caused his father to send him to Venice at the age of ten, that he might learn to be a painter.

Titian is acknowledged as one of the greatest colourists of all time, who pioneered the use of oil paints, and paved the way for generations of artists to come.
As a major new exhibition of Titian's work opens at the National Gallery in February 2003, BBC TWO will journey back to the 16th century to recreate the studio in which Titian composed the masterpieces that cemented his reputation as the greatest painter of the Venetian School.
The Artist's Studio explores the engine room of creativity at the very heart of the artistic process, taking a fresh look at the life and work of Titian from within his own world.

The outstanding painter of his era, Titian redefined painting and developed a style that not only determined the direction of Venetian painting for the next two centuries but profoundly influenced the work of geniuses distant in time and place, such as Rubens, Velázquez, and Rembrandt.
Titian also took great care with the rich costume of the man but, through unfortunate overcleaning, carried out before the painting entered Joslyn's collection, much of the artist's characteristic subtlety has been lost.
A consummate colorist, Titian exploited the oil medium relatively recently introduced to Italy - to create effects that were quite unlike the clear, linear images of previous Florentine and Venetian painting.

The latter, with whom Titian also collaborated, was influential for his tonal approach to painting and for his landscape style, which was atmospheric and evocative.

 Titian's Venus of Urbino
Given that the beautiful woman is the archetypal subject of beautiful art, Titian's women may be understood as illustrations not only of his artistic gifts but of his superiority to his rivals, past and present.
In Titian's art, the anonymous beauty becomes a mythic being, she becomes Sacred and Profane Love or Venus herself, or indeed she becomes the very embodiment of beauty.
Thus Titian, like Giorgione and others before them, borrowed for painting a posture famously conceived for sculpture, which makes the paragone of the arts a subtext of the Venus of Urbino.
