Adoration of the Magi (Leonardo) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Adoration of the Magi (1481) is an early painting by Leonardo da Vinci.
God knows who did it, but it was not Leonardo." Seracini completed 2400 detailed infrared photographic records of the painting's elaborate underdrawing in 2005, repeating his opinion that Leonardo completed the underdrawing, but that the paint surface was added by an unknown artist.
He concluded that it could not, adding that in his view only the underdrawing was by Leonardo, the paint surface having been added by another, weaker, artist.

Adoration of the Magi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gentile da Fabriano's Adoration of the Magi, now in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, is probably the most famous painting of the scene.
The usefulness of the subject to the Church and the technical challenges involved in representing it have made the Adoration of the Magi a favorite subject of Christian art: chiefly painting, but also also sculpture and even music (as in Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors).

Adoration of the Magi by LEONARDO da Vinci
Even though the panel remained unfinished, the Adoration of the Magi, with its symmetrically composed main group which differs from the traditional linear composition, is now considered one of the most progressive works in Florentine painting.
The painting also differs from the traditional way of depicting the Adoration in Florence by means of the puzzling scenes in the background, the equestrian battles and an unfinished staircase.
This led to the assumption that the Augustinian convent of San Donato in Scopeto, which had commissioned the picture, wanted to use this picture composition in order to convey its own theological interpretation of the Adoration theme.

 Leonardo DaVinci
Leonardo was commissioned in 1480 to paint this work for the main altar of the monastery of San Donato a Scopeto, near Florence.
In an even earlier sketch for this painting Leonardo drew the figures of the wise men naked so he could then clothe their forms correctly.
He would devote months to the problems of content and composition but quickly tired of the physical act of carrying out the painting itself.

Slugger O'Toole: Da Vinci's Adoration of the Magi revealed
There is ample documentary evidence that he was commissioned to paint an Adoration of the Magi and that he completed at least part of the work.
ANYway, Maurizio Seracini, who is something of an Leonardo specialist has been examining Da Vinci's The Adoration of the Magi for four years according to the Guardian, funded by the Swiss-based Kalpa group as part of its Art Diagnostics Project.
In a discovery which was unpalatable to the Uffizi Gallery which owns the painting, Dr. Seracini has been able to prove that the top layer of the Adoration of the Magi is not by Leonardo.

Underneath was the present picture, the Adoration of the Magi, undoubtedly painted by Heinrik Pot.
He purchased the painting, brought it to America, and then waited with great anticipation while he had a specialist remove the upper surface which had been painted over the much more valuable original, probably to conceal a picture which many years before might have been removed from a collection surreptitiously.
A professional appraisal was performed in 1994, at which time this painting, if restored, had an estimated value of $65,000.
