 MSN Encarta - Theodore Gericault
Géricault, (Jean Louis André) Théodore (1791-1824), French painter, perhaps the most influential artist of his time, and a seminal figure of the 19th-century romantic movement in art.
At the time of his death, Géricault was engaged in painting a series of portraits of mental patients that demonstrate the preoccupation of the romantic artists with derangement and neurosis.
Early in his career, Géricault's paintings began to exhibit qualities that set him apart from such neoclassical French painters as Jacques-Louis David.

Easily depressed or elated, Géricault took to heart the hostility which this work excited, and passed nearly two years in London, where the Radeau was exhibited with success, and where he executed many series of admirable lithographs now rare.
Disconcerted by the tempest of contradictory opinion which arose over these two pictures, Géricault gave way to his enthusiasm for horses and soldiers, and enrolled himself in the mousquetaires.
During the Hundred Days he followed the king to Bethune, but, on his regiment being disbanded, eagerly returned to his profession, left France for Italy in 1816, and at Rome nobly illustrated his favourite animal by his great painting Course des Chevaux Libres.

French painter Théodore Géricault became a leader of the romantic movement in France.
The vivid action and spirited design of works such as The Wounded Cuirassier (1814) provoked strong emotional reactions among a public more familiar with the balance and reserve of neoclassical art.

 "You see...evil will always triumph...because good...is dumb"
This was, as any Pogues fan or art historian will tell you, a reworking of the famous painting by Jean Louis André Théodore Géricault, The Raft of the Medusa, completed in 1819, and altered in 1985 to feature the faces of the Pogues.
The band played in the Nelson-era naval costumes featured on the album's inner sleeve and journalists fought over the free drinks.

 Romanticism - free-definition
In France, Romanticism is associated with the 19th century, particularly in the paintings of Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix, the plays of Victor Hugo and the novels of Stendhal.
In Roman Catholic countries, Romanticism was less pronounced than in Protestant Germany and Britain, and tended to develop later, after the rise of Napoleon.
In Russia, the principal exponent of Romanticism is Alexander Pushkin ; though Russian composers are also given the label.
