Still life - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A still life is a work of art which represents a subject composed of inanimate objects.
Popular in Western art since the 17th century, still life paintings, such as of flowers or fruit, give the artist more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture.
Typical of the American still life works of this period are the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe, Stuart Davis, and Marsden Hartley, and the photographs of Edward Weston.

The Phillips Collection has put together a sensational exhibition not to miss with some 80 still life paintings on display among which are at least two dozen masterpieces (at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, some additional works will be presented; in total 92 paintings).
The works from 55 public and private collections around the world document the development and transformation of late 19th-century still life painting from Courbet's realism to the late work of Cézanne which presages the cubism of Braque and Picasso.

The objects of daily life, especially flowers and foodstuffs, have been a favorite subject matter for painters since Greek times when depictions of flowers, fruit, fish, food were not only painted on walls, but worked in mosaic on the floors of palaces and baths.
Now there is no question that still life can speak eloquently, both formally and poetically as a "noble" genre of fine art.
Individual artists ignored this categorizing, of course, but it wasn't until Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) and his philosophy of realism and pure painting that still life began a life as an independent vehicle for form, color and paint surface, divorced from the classifications of the Academy.
