 Krakow News Wyspianski Returns
One heads on through Wyspianski's eccentric experiments in furniture (some of which succeeded rather better than others it must be said!) and on into his magnificent pastel portraits, and then to the highly original designs for the stained glass windows of the Medical Society and the Franciscan Church.
One begins with sketches and paintings from the artist's youth, heading on through his early, traditional designs under the wing of Jan Matejko, the grand old man of nineteenth century Polish painting, who had employed Wyspianski as one of his pupils during the regeneration of the historic church of St. Mary's.
It always seemed rather dark and forlorn, with small, poorly lit rooms that were not at all well-suited to exhibiting such a wide range of art.

History is less visible in Wyspianski's paintings and pastels than in his dramas and poems, but his representations of the "Polish Acropolis," as Wyspianski called the Wawel Hill, a the most impressive ever produced.

To Wyspianski, the Art Nouveau trends revealed the relatedness of the arts, their inter-penetration, their movement towards synthesis.

NCAW Autumn 02 Irena Kossowska reviews Early Modern Polish Art
This is particularly striking in the case of Wyspianski, whose landscapes and portraiture are hardly mentioned, even though this part of the artist's oeuvre had a strong impact upon the younger generation of Polish modernists.
Another odd classification is that of Wyspianski, whom Cavanaugh presents as a leading symbolist (with Malczewski) yet whose portraits, especially self-portraits, undoubtedly belong to the sphere of intensified expression.
She emphasizes the critics' international connections: the Scandinavian and German literary movements as well as the expressionist tendencies in the visual arts (Edvard Munch, Gustav Vigeland), with which Przybyszewski was aligned, and French and Belgian symbolism, which Przesmycki advocated.
