 The Pottery Studio: Ruskin decorations
The Pottery Studio is a knowledge base for lovers of studio pottery, art pottery, craft pottery, and just about any other kind of pottery.
In 1898 he founded the Ruskin Pottery, named for the artist John Ruskin, at Smethwick, near Birmingham, for his son to run.
The pottery won many prizes, world wide, most notably at the St Louis Centennial Exhibition of 1904.

Perhaps he had in his sights the unsatisfied demand of the burgeoning middle class who aspired to purchase wares of the quality of the much admired Ruskin Pottery, which was hand-thrown and expensive.
It was this art glazed pottery that was first given the name Chameleon Ware in 1914.
He had a great interest in the chemistry of glazing and by 1913 he was working hard on establishing the production of 'artistic pottery' at affordable prices.
