Collection of works by Richard Long
The artist exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1976 and again in 1980.
The artist made his first word-work for that exhibition.
As Long began exhibiting more frequently, he was forced to confront the relationship between his walking and the presentation of his work in a gallery.

According to the artist, the journeys themselves are works of art: "the purpose of the artwork is not to illustrate.
His work is sometimes categorized with that of the earth artists, a group of artists who began in the 1960s to use natural materials and to work outside of gallery settings, often altering the landscape itself.
His work is therefore sometimes categorized with that of the earth artists, a group of artists who began in the 1960s to use natural materials and work outside gallery settings, often altering the landscape itself.

 Richard Long Exhibition
Richard Long is internationally acclaimed and is a distinctive and important figure in the history of post-war British art.
Long's works are his personal response to the landscape which surrounds him on the walks which he undertakes all over the world.
The title, A road from the Past to the Future, was chosen by the artist to represent his longstanding friendship with John Haldane and his family.

Resurgence issue 227 - DIALOGUE WITH NATURE by Mark Kidel
RICHARD LONG is a singular artist, and one of the leading practitioners of 'Land Art'.
The photographs of Long's walks, and the work he makes along his way, are almost all in black and white, and the gallery work is generally 'natural'-coloured: shades of stone and mud, mostly.
The Long aesthetic is pared down, without the distraction of a full range of hues, in stark contrast with the work of that other celebrated British Land Artist, Andy Goldsworthy.

Dialogue: Richard Long - Jivya Soma Mashe
The joint exhibition of British rural artist Richard Long (*1945) and the Indian artist Jivya Soma Mashe (*1934), a master of the traditional art of the Warli tribe, demonstrates – as did the opening exhibition “Altäre” in 2001 – the global perspective of the museum kunst palast.
And another collective theme can be discovered in the works of these two artists from such different cultures: the bridging of time and space, of the past and the present using the means of art.
The art dialogue between the works created by Richard Long on location in India using natural materials such as rice, ash, water, spices or with swept earth in archetypal forms and the narrative paintings by Mashe created using cow dung and acrylic continues in the Düsseldorf exhibition.

Tate Britain Turner Prize History Artists: Richard Long
Richard Long's art is about his relationship to the landscape.
In his winning year, Long was selected for the enduring influence and significance of his sculptures as shown in a Channel 4 film entitled Stones and Flies, as well as his Footprints in Avon Mud exhibition held the Theatre Royal in Bristol.
He is the only artist to be shortlisted for the Prize four times.

Richard Long - Jivya Soma Mashe. A meeting in India
Large size works by Richard Long are displayed, created using mud and acrylic paint on wood panels dated 2003 together with a series of photographs that document the works created by the artist during his stay in India.
The artistic dialogue established between the works created in India by Richard Long, who used natural materials such as rice, ashes, water, or designed archetypical forms with earth, and the narrative paintings by Mashe performed with cow dung and acrylics continues in the exhibition mounted in the rooms of the PAC.
And there is another element that these two artists belonging to such different cultures share: they use the medium of art to throw a bridge between time and space, between past and present.

 PrintedMatter.org
Artists in the mid-to-late 1960s presented their work in the form of books with increasing frequency, either to document an event or an ephemeral work, or to make their art inexpensively available to a wider audience than it otherwise might find in a gallery.
In any case, it is clear that visual artists have contributed to most to the revitalization of the books as art over the last twenty -five years, and to the development of visual and verbi-visual languages articulated within the book form...
Artists associated with the Conceptual movement, such as John Baldessari, Douglas Hueber, Sol LeWitt and Richard Long, all published books both as documentation of projects in other media and, more importantly, as independent works in themselves.

Richard Long (artist) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Richard Long (born June 2, 1945) is a British sculptor, photographer and painter, one of the best known British land artists.
Long was born in Bristol, and studied art first there, and later at St Martin's School of Art in London.
Several of his works are based around walks that he has made, and often consist of photographs or maps of the landscape he has walked over.

 Richard Long Press Release
Born in Bristol, England in 1945, Richard Long has been a significant figure in the development of the Minimal and Conceptual art movements of the early 1970s, using the artist's direct interaction with nature as the subject matter of his art.
Although Long's sculptures conform to a few basic shapes——lines, rectangles and circles——they vary remarkably depending on the artist's choice of stone.
Working in the landscape has been the wellspring of Long's art for almost 30 years.

 Richard Lack -- Biography
Unsatisfied by the work of the artists that he found, he inquired at London’s National Portrait Gallery about painters working in the United States.
Whether recognized by the contemporary art world or not, these artists knew the expressive potential of the great tradition to which they were dedicated was not yet exhausted.
Later, in life, Lack recounted how this rejection of his work by the art establishment proved to be a blessing in disguise.

 PAF: Projects: Long
As a pioneer of conceptual and land art, this British artist is renowned for his elegant sculptures, text works and mud drawings that use the most minimal of means to striking effect.
Quite different from Long's usual sculptural formations created in the countryside where most of his sculptures are seen by a wider public only through photographic documentation of the works, Long's New York Projects will be encountered by thousands of people on a daily basis.
After studying art at St. Martin's School of Art, London in the early sixties, Long became a pioneer among British artists introducing land-based installations, text works and drawings using materials found in nature.

 RICHARD HAINES
American Muralist and Modernist
(1906-1984)
By the middle 1950's Haines was a recognized and succesful artist and that he devoted himself primarily to painting in oil in the last three decades of his career.
The artist developed a distinctive style of representation which was at first influenced by cubist and abstracted geometric work.
Haines was a working artist, always more interested in his current artistic endeavor rather than the social scene of the art world and its powerful patrons.

Richard Long: A Walk Across England : Books : Thames & Hudson
Long is an artist who has helped to redefine the boundaries of art practice, making much of his art as he moves through the different land surfaces which cover the planet, or bringing the environment into the gallery itself, in the form of stone, wood, clay or water.
Long brings to Land Art a poetic quality that asks us to re-examine our links with the world around us and look again at surroundings that we may feel that we know well.
Starting at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, on the Devon coast, and finishing on the edge of the North Sea in East Anglia, Richard Long has created a work of art out of an eleven-day walk across England.

Sculptor, photographer and painter, Richard Long, interacts with nature and the landscape, forging his own conceptions of the relationship between people and their environment.
Some 100 records in photographs and text of his walks and installations from 1967 to 1997 form the heart of the book; the introduction by Alison Sleeman gives a concise account of Long's career and an assessment of his work; and in an interview, Long talks about his ideas, working methods and sources of inspiration.
In this book he presents a "mini-retrospective" of his walks, sculptures and conceptual works, charting his development and his current preoccupations.
