Quills were used as instruments for writing with ink before the metal dip pen, the fountain pen, and eventually the ball point pen came into use.
Quills Kaufman makes the Marquis de Sade a poster-child for the freedom of expression—the same marquis who spent nearly 30 years in prison for crimes that included rape, and whose writings retain their pornographic sting 200 years after their publication.
Quills is no exception, and, in an imaginative tribute to the setting, cinematographer Rogier Stoffers has unobtrusively covered his images with a smoky veneer, as if they were old paintings in need of a slight cleaning.

The quill pen was very popular with artists from the 15th century to the end of the 19th century.
Leonardo (1452-1519) favoured the quill, while Rembrandt (1606-69) used a reed pen; Dürer (1471-1528), Holbein (1497-1543), Watteau (1684-1721) and van Gogh (1858-90) are some of the great artists who have worked in pen and ink.

Quill work on bark is an ancient art, as old or older than sewn quill embroidery, both Native American traditions for probably thousands of years.
Porcupine quill decoration on bark is not as well know as porcupine quill embroidery on leather, and compared to sewn embroidery on leather, it is less time consuming but is admittedly much easier to learn.
Though quill decoration on was known to all groups of Native Americans living in the range of porcupine, a few groups of eastern Woodland Natives are particularly well known for decoration on birch bark.

The chapter on ink-makers and scribes shows and tells how scribes made ink, made pens, and drew straight lines on a page, with photographs of a Medieval inkwell, styli and rules for drawing lines, quill pens, and pen knives.
His chapter on paper- and parchment-makers includes a detailed description of how parchment was made, and the accompanying illustrations are of manuscript pages showing people making parchment, and photographs showing pages folded and bound into signatures.
