For those who are using outline fonts, see also IPA monafont project which tries to adjust IPA-provided fonts for text arts.
Our goal is to provide a standard font for text arts in various formats which gives to users a consistent image of a text art.
The text arts above are composed with proportional fonts, so overall impressions of the images are highly affected by the width of each letter.

This is a "fixed-width only" site because it is absolutely essential to the cross-compatibility of ASCII art.
Those who wish to create ASCII art in a proportional width font certainly have the right to do so.

Manually-operated phototypographic composition systems (using fonts made on rolls of film) allowed fine kerning between letters without great physical effort for the first time and spawned a large type-design industry in the 1960s and 1970s.

Courier is sometimes used as a quick way to type highly formatted columnar text, since it is easier to prepare that way.
The technology of the typewriter (until the IBM Selectric) required that every character, whether upper or lower case, whether it is an i or a w, be the same width as every other character, since each character appeared on a piece of metal which would strike the ribbon and apply the ink to the paper.
What makes this easier is that even a space occupies the same amount of horizontal space as the letter w or the letter i or the letter M. This would look considerable better in proportional font, but the formatting would be more complex.

A proportional font is one in which different letters are different widths, and blank spaces can be adjusted to best fit text on the line.
For this reason, HTML provides a Formatted style (also called the Preformatted style) that automatically uses whatever monospace font is available on the visitor's computer.
To get really tight control over the exact placement of characters in a chunk of text, you need to use a monospace font, in which each character, including each blank space, is exactly the same width.
