Performance poetry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Performance poets relied more on the rhetorical and philosophical expression in their poetics than performance artists, who arose from the visual art genres of painting and sculpture.
Performance Poetry is not solely a postmodern phenomenon.
Performance Poetry with music peaked during the 1980s just as Performance Art peaked in the 1970s.

Poetry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Poetry was employed as a means of recording oral history, storytelling (epic poetry), genealogy, and law.
Prose poetry combines the characteristics of poetry with the superficial appearance of prose.

Unlike other performing arts such as music and theatre in which the author does not necessarily perform the work themselves, the writer of performance poetry is generally also the performer.
This constructed nature of 'art' is further underlined with the performance of performance poetry.
His main concern is with the effect of the audience upon the composition of their poetry, but his analysis is based mainly upon the printed versions not the performance.

 Performance Poetry - toddswift.com
Poetry has never meant just one thing, and has passed down to us for over two thousand years through a myriad of languages, forms and media, accompanied by music, in folio, even in symbols, and has never shaken off its ancient kinship with ritual and song.
Nonetheless, this primarily urban, often ethnic, and unrelentingly "hip" series of constituencies continued to express itself, via music, film and more and more poetry, still emphasising the oral, democratic and public transmission of its work, over the more-privileged and less inviting medium of "academic" - that is patriarchal, white straight male and euro-centric - publication.
While some poets clearly move between being just "poets" and "performance poets" when they appear before an audience, like Hal Sirowitz, for example, certain key slam or spoken word "divas" like Maggie Estep or Patricia Smith or Taylor Mali, are first and foremost Performance Poets, and have no problem with that.

Poetry's roots are in performance and it is often forgotten that poetry originated as an oral and aural art.
Lyric poetry is a type of poetry that has its roots in song and music, and is characterized today by the short, personal, highly imagistic and sensory poem.
Performance poets may not care as much about how their poem looks on the page as how it sounds when they read it, though this is not always the case.
