ORATORIO - LoveToKnow Article on ORATORIO
Handel discovered and matured every possibility of oratorio as an art-form, except such as may now be brought to light by those composers with whom the influence of Wagner is not too overwhelming for them to consider how far his principles are applicable to an art unconnected with the stage.
Though Berliozs essay, in oratorio is not quite so irresponsible a vocalsymphonic-dramatic medley as his Romeo et Julietle and Damnation,de Faust, it unmistakably marks a transition towards the complete secularizing of the Bible for musical purposes.
Shortly before Bach, Passion oratorios, not always so entitled, were represented by several remarkable and mature works of art, most notably by R. Keiser (1673-1739).

 Oratorio
Mendelssohn had started the composition of another oratorio, "Christus," on the lines of the "Passion" music of Bach, but died before the work was completed.
He uses a fugal style quite freely in his choruses, but a strict fugue, in the style of Handel, is rare, as the composer's feeling for emotional effects demands a freer style ; the accompaniments are elaborate, partaking of the dramatic element and drawing upon the fullest re-sources of the orchestra.
This latter point is strikingly present in the texts of Handel's oratorios ; the symbolic meaning of the narrative is clearly indicated and made the central thought of the work, producing a remarkable effect of Unity.

 The Oratorio
THE oratorio in its modern form is a musical setting of a sacred story or text in a style more or less dramatic.
Caldara wrote a large number of oratorios, mostly adapted to the poetry of Zeno and Metastasio, which are said to have been delightful productions.
After his death, however, in 1595, his work was continued by Emilio del Cavaliere, a Roman composer, who produced the first real oratorio which had as yet appeared.

 Musical Forms - Oratorio
From the mid-17th century composers began including music with non-biblical texts; this resulted in the 'oratorio Passion', a genre that culminated in the Passions of Bach.
The music of Haydn's late oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons, reflects his experience of Handelian oratorio in London.
After 1800 fewer major composers devoted their main energies to oratorio, but the genre continued to occupy a central place, especially in England and Germany, with the emphasis on massive performances at music festivals.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Oratorio
A third oratorio, "Ritorno di Tobia", on a Biblical text, has not the same importance, nor does Mozart (1756-91), in his only oratorio, "Davidde penitente", attain the artistic level of most of his productions, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) wrote one oratorio, "The Mount of Olives", which shows him at his best.
Through Händel the oratorio attained a position in musical art more important than at any previous period in its history and never surpassed since.
France, which, since the days of Charpentier, had practically neglected the oratorio, probably on account of the opera appealing more strongly to French taste and temperament, and because of the lack of amateur singers has, within the last thirty years, furnished a number of remarkable works.

 The Oratorio
English composers were writing oratorios for the next 150 years.
Why, then - if an oratorio is generally lamer than an opera, would it have caught on at all?
Handel was later commissioned to write the "Messiah".

 oratorio --  Britannica Student Encyclopedia
He is chiefly notable for his oratorios (choral works based on sacred texts) and secular cantatas (works for one or two voices and instruments).
Both are extended works in which a narrative is set to music.
The leading Neapolitan opera composers also helped to establish the Baroque successor to the madrigal—the cantata—which originated as a secular form for solo voice with instrumental accompaniment.

 Oratorio Society 117 years old -- From Progress '98 January 22, 1998
Soon, the Handel Oratorio Society was doing other sacred works as well, and for years the custom has been to present a second work in the spring.
ROCK ISLAND -- Olaf Olsson, an Augustana College professor, went to London in 1880 and heard Handel's ``Messiah.'' It was a mystical experience for him, and he wanted to bring that great music back to his small college in Rock Island.
This was when the founder of Bethany College, another Lutheran school in Kansas, heard the music and started the Bethany ``Messiah'' tradition.

Program Notes - Bach's Christmas Oratorio
The Christmas Oratorio departs from that pattern, combining prose and reflective poetry in a text that is dominated by strict quotations from the Bible.
But, while it is true that it does not conform to the genre as it was generally known in that period, all the evidence – most powerfully in the music itself – suggests that Bach conceived the work as a complete and integrated whole.
The texts of the originals are both by Picander (Christian Friedrich Henrici), and so skillfully is the poetry rewritten and transformed to fit the themes of the new work that it is often speculated that he is the anonymous librettist for the Christmas Oratorio as well.

Handel's oratorio a confrontation between hope and despair
He was a man of the theater in his genes, but when necessary he channeled that instinct for dramatic action into oratorios like "Messiah'' that bristle with musical evocations of furiously warring nations and sorrowing penitents.

 Christmas Oratorio
Christmas Oratorio is the story of three generations of men, all deeply affected by the tragic death of a wonderful woman.
Solveig's death was certainly tragic, but her legacy is ultimately as glorious as the dream her grandson finally fulfills.

GEBEL Christmas Oratorio CPO 999 993-2 [JV]: Classical CD Reviews- Jan 2004 MusicWeb(UK)
There are more places where Gebel uses the instruments to illustrate the text, like in the bass aria in the New Year's Oratorio 'Fliehe nur, gemessne Zeit' (Flee, measured time), where the first violin's semiquavers are expressing the fleetingness of time.
The fact that the St John Passion by Gebel impressed me somewhat more than these oratorios is also due to the level of the performance.
The Christmas Oratorio is comparable with the Passion oratorios as they were written from the 1740s on.

 Bach Choir of Bethlehem
The main key of the oratorio is D major, something it shares with both the Easter Oratorio and Christmas Oratorio.
Called an "oratorio," this is, like the Christmas Oratorio, really a cantata-style piece (the Christmas Oratorio, recall, is actually a series of 6 cantatas).
Bach wrote several cantatas for the Feast of the Ascension (BWV 37, 43, and 128), though none matches the musical scope of the Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11, sometimes referred to as BWV 249a).

 Emmanuel Music/Christmas Oratorio Program Notes
Scholars have always been worried that the recycling of these works somehow "taints" the sincerity and authenticity of the Christmas Oratorio.
A work in this style was probably written for Pentecost but has been lost.
Bach's Christmas Oratorio has always seemed to me the ur-Christmas music, simply the profoundest thoughts on the matter ever uttered.

Now entering its 26th year, Oratorio Singers is a chorus of 70-100 singers which performs major choral works by various composers.

 Classical Net - J.S. Bach - Cantata Listener's Guide - BWV 11
The Ascension Oratorio, along with the Easter Oratorio, is one of those works which, for reasons that completely baffle me, seems to be little known and rarely recorded.
It is shorter (roughly thirty minutes) than the "great" Passions, the Christmas Oratorio or the b minor Mass and it is tucked away in the great volume of the cantatas.
Perhaps its reputation has suffered because the major parts of it were parodied from pre-existing (but now lost) secular cantatas.

 Parry: Job - An Oratorio
His star was to a large degree eclipsed by that of his slightly younger contemporary Elgar at the end of his lifetime, but there's no doubt that the latter was strongly influenced by Parry's music, especially when it came to writing his oratorios, as this recording well shows.
This fine work has never been recorded before.
Apart from Blest Pair of Sirens, little of Parry's choral music has been performed — or recorded — in recent years.

 What is an Oratorio?
The Oratorio had been established as a term for a musical genre in Italy around 1660.
Bach's Christmas Oratorio consisted of six parts in cantata form and had a total of 64 musical numbers.
Oratorio functioned as an entertainment performed in an oratory (or prayer hall, which is the Italian term for oratorio).

Parrott’s phrasing and shaping of the music reveals his keen awareness of rhetorical and refreshing elements in repertoire that can often descend into bombast.
It is a triumphant vindication of a subtle musical approach to an oratorio that admittedly is not an obvious candidate for Handel’s most subtle composition.
