 BBC - h2g2 - The Omega Workshops - A718544
The workshops opened in 1913 and were established through bequests and donations from famous figures of the London arts scene, such as George Bernard Shaw.
The Omega artists were preparing for a national interior design exhibition at the time, which only heightened the public nature of the defection.
The Bloomsbury Group were a group of artists, painters and thinkers who were the enfants terribles of artistic London, during the first half of the 20th Century.

 day
Just as the Omega was preparing for their debut at a national interior design exhibition, four artists left the studio to form a separate group.
The purpose of the Workshops was to offer financial support to participants' fine art careers, while permitting artists the freedom to experiment with techniques of modernist art.
The Omega's works are indeed very distinct from the modernist values espoused by the Vorticists, however, their domestic interiors reflect an aesthetic that resembling works of some well-establish modernists.

Nina Hamnett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Her reputation soon reached back to London, where for a time, she went to work at the Omega Workshops on decorative art.
Her artistic creations were widely exhibited during World War I including at the Royal Academy in London as well as the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
Very quickly, she became a well-known Bohemian personality throughout Paris and modelled for many artists.

She has served as faculty for the Cave Canem New York City workshop and she is a recipient of The Grolier Poetry Prize.
Throughout the week, we are immersed in the passion of poetry: We write, read, listen to, and discuss the poems of several nationally known poets.
Her writing has been described as "casual and startling, fierce and transcendent," and Michael Ondaatje has called her poems "pure fire in the hands."

 Bloomsbury: Omega & Hogarth
It was really a moment which brought together all the younger painters in England into a sort of mass movement.
In 1913, with artist Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant as his co-directors, artist and art critic Roger Fry started the Omega Workshops (at Fitzroy Square, Bloomsbury).
The background is from an Omega woodcut and the portrait of Roger Fry ( top) is by Vanessa Bell.

Welcome to Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum
This is a fantastic opportunity to see works of art from Sitwell’s collection, mainly from the family home at Renishaw Hall; among artists represented are Paul Nash, John Piper, Percy Wyndham Lewis, the Omega Workshops, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, CRW Nevinson and Edward Wadsworth.
Osbert Sitwell, with his sister Edith and brother Sacheverell, moved in the artistic and avant-garde circles of the early 20th century.
They had connections with the Bloomsbury Group, the Omega Workshops and some First World War artists.

Tate Archive Journeys Bloomsbury Art: Omega Workshops
Fry felt that objects and furniture should be bought for their aesthetic qualities rather than the reputation of the artist, so he insisted that all work was produced anonymously.
Unlike his most obvious predecessors William Morris and the designers of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Fry was not concerned with social reform or protesting against contemporary machine manufacture, but wanted to remove what he saw as the false division between the fine and decorative arts.
The workshops incorporated public showrooms as well as studios, and were staffed by a business manager, caretaker and a group of artist assistants.

 The Omega Workshops:Collins, Judith:0226113752:eCampus.com
Founded in 1913 by British painter and critic Roger Fry, partly from philanthropic concern for impecunious young artists and partly in despair at the taste of the British public, the Omega workshops were to bring together art and industry to create murals, furniture, pottery, textiles, and clothing.
The Omega Workshops recounts for the first time the full story of the Bloomsbury Group's venture into interior decoration and furniture design.

Tate Archive Journeys Bloomsbury Art: Omega Workshops, decline
By this time Fry was the only original member still working regularly at Fitzroy Square as Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant were now living at Charleston, and many of the other artists had moved on.
Charles Ryder, the narrator, remembers the furnishings of his college room at Oxford as having included (along with a print of Van Gogh's Sunflowers):
The letter announced their resignation from the group, a split ultimately leading to the formation of the rival decorative workshop Rebel Art Centre and the establishment of the Vorticist movement.

Wyndham Lewis may also have been involved in the founding of the Workshops.
The name Omega Workshops was first mentioned in Fry’s circular letter of 11 December 1912 sent out as a financial appeal.
Of the various explanations of the name the most common is that it implied the products to be the ‘last word’ in design (OH being the last letter of the Greek alphabet).
