Oil pastel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oil pastel is a painting and drawing medium with characteristics similar to pastels and wax crayons.
Since oil pastels are a relatively new invention, the effects of dust and light on oil pastel works is not yet known; inability to age gracefully would limit their value in galleries, so many are translated into a print form by lithography or its variant giclcées.
Oil pastels are considered a fast medium because they are easy to paint with and not cumbersome to carry around, for this reason they are often used for sketching but can also be used for sustained works.

 FAQ's on Oil Pastels
This is because oil pastel never really dries and forever remains somewhat workable – oil paint on top of it would crack and generally be unstable.;  whereas the oil paint creates a hard skin and creates a firm base for the oil pastel on top of it.
The nature of the oil pastel medium is to be self-fixing.
This is what makes oil pastels different from oil sticks, which are oil paints in stick form and dry with a skin like any other oil paint.
