Helvetica/9 (or the almost identical XHelvetica/9) is too small; the lower-case letters are only four pixels high, which means the a's and e's and other complex little letters look strange.
I made these fonts more than a year ago, but as I recently got a request for them by someone who saw a grab of my Workbench Screen, I decided to upload them.
I use it as the `tiny' font in MUI.) It's very similar to the Helvetica font, but the characters are bigger and much more legible IMO.

There are similar sorts of art, called Macros which use proportional fonts and alternative characters, often seen on AOL.
(But generally not word processors because of the need for a non-proportional font.) Some people even use a nifty program which converts gifs and jpgs into solid style ascii., but the results of those still need 'cleaning up' to make them look like anything.
So a good picture from that sort of program will still have had a touch of real artistry put into it!

 Non-proportional Font Oddity in Word 97
I created a macro that opens all the files in a specified directory, does some formatting and then prints the document to a postscript file.
The oddity is that if I process the files in Word 95, everything lines up properly, ie, the 52nd character on each line is aligned with the 52nd character on every other line.
We're using the nonproportional font Courier because the data is spaced out into tables and needs to line up correctly.
