Topic: Neoplasticism

 Bloomsbury.com - Research centre
Neoplasticism, or De Stijl ('The Style'), was an art movement founded by the painter and architect Theo van Doesburg in Leiden in 1917.
Neoplasticism rejected figuration as the goal of art, and replaced it with the pared-down vocabulary of elemental shapes and primary colours, thereby allowing art to express its own 'plastic' language free of the concerns of representation.
The austere forms of De Stijl were well suited to the geometric structures favoured by the International Modernist movement, while the primary colours favoured by the painters could be used as decorative elements to articulate an otherwise plain facade, for instance in Oud's Café De Unie in Rotterdam (1925).

Piet Mondrian, Neoplasticism and De Stijl
Using his doctrine of Neoplasticism as a guide Mondrian and other artists created works of art which were collectively known as De Stijl (The Style).
The computer can produce the elements of his painting with a purity and uniformity that was only approximated with the use of canvas and paints.
But these schools of thought in art were left behind at he developed his own doctrine of art, called Neoplasticism.

Suphawut.com: Visual Art & Graphic Design: Modern Art: Piet Mondrian
Neoplasticism is the theory and practice of the de Stijl group, chiefly characterized by an emphasis on the formal structure of a work of art, and restriction of spatial or linear relations to vertical and horizontal movements as well as restriction of the artist's palette to black, white, and the primary colors.
In 1917 Mondrian and the Dutch painter Theo van Doesburg founded de Stijl magazine, in which Mondrian developed his theories of a new art form Neoplasticism.
It rejected all representation and restricted the elements of artistic expression to the use of straight lines, right angles, pure primary colors (blue, red, and yellow), and the so-called non-colors of black, gray, and white.

Meanwhile, its art was outdistanced of that of Mondrian by the introduction of the relief which develops until becoming a true mural sculpture.
It is following the visit of the House of the New Spirit to the Exposure of Decorative Arts, held in Paris in 1925, that its first purely abstract compositions date.
Its way is definitively traced after having met, in Paris, Mondrian, major figure of the Neoplasticism, and Michel Seuphor (1926-1927).

 Art Comparison
The style of Neoplasticism was created by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian in an attempt to form a simple, perfectly balanced, pure composition.
Abstract Expressionism, another style of Modernist art, was primarily an American movement that went away from the scientific and toward the unpredictable.
Both works have been in a museum or gallery since they were created.

Influenced by cubism, Mondrian created a style called “neoplasticism,” which he used in works such as Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue and Broadway Boogie Woogie.
In 1910 he went to Paris, where the influence of cubism stimulated the development of his geometric, nonobjective style, which he called neoplasticism.

It is probably best to consider Neoplasticism as the art "movement" and De Stijl as the loose association of contributors to the journal of that name.
English art historians refer to "De Stijl" without translating it (as they do with the Bauhaus, the Fauves, etc.)
Neoplasticism is a translation of the Dutch "nieuwe beelding," not De Stijl.

There are many abstract artists who painted in these styles, however there are some that are more well know in a particular field than the rest.
Two of the most famous examples of Abstract Expressionism are Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock.

Neoplasticism - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Neoplasticism
Mondrian was the leading figure of De Stijl, a group of abstract artists based in the Netherlands, and he first used the term neoplasticism (in Dutch ‘nieuwe beelding’, literally ‘new image creation’ or ‘new structure’) in a series of articles published in the group's journal (also called De Stijl) in 1917–18.
Term used by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian for both the severely geometrical style of painting he practised and the ideas that lay behind it.
Mondrian lived in France for many years, and he later used a French equivalent, ‘néo-plasticisme’, from which the English phrase is derived.

Cubism and the related movements of Futurism, Constructivism, Suprematism, and Neoplasticism, like any artistic styles, might have faltered and fallen into a merely decorative cliché, as at the Paris Exposition of 1925, but for Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier.
Van Doesburg's work for the Bauhaus art school at Weimar brought the influence of Dutch Neoplasticism to bear upon Gropius and Mies, whose plans for houses at times markedly resembled van Doesburg's paintings.
Rietveld's Schroeder House, built in 1924 at Utrecht, was a three-dimensional parallel to Mondrian's paintings of the period.

The origins of that *style* of painting, that is. So it turns out there was this Dutch guy, Piet Mondrian, whose theory about painting went something like this: all of painting is basically about drawing and coloring.
Anyways, all visitors to her (my sis-in-law's) home speculate on the motivation behind that painting.
As per his style/philosophy ("Neoplasticism"), the basic drawing element is the straight line and the basic "primordial" colors are red, yellow and blue.

When the intent of the artist is to achieve regularity of pattern and placement and uniformity of color computer graphics can more closely achieve the artist's intention than he or she can using physical media.
