Montmartre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Musée de Montmartre is in the house where the painter Maurice Utrillo lived and worked in a second-floor studio.
Vie quotidienne a Montmartre au temps de Picasso, 1900-1910 (Daily Life on Montmartre in the Times of Picasso) was written by Jean-Paul Crespelle, an author-historian who specialized in the artistic life of Montmartre and Montparnasse.
The last of the bohemian Montmartre artists was Gen Paul (1895–1975), born in Montmartre and a friend of Utrillo, Paul's calligraphic expressionist lithographs, sometimes memorializing picturesque Montmartre itself, owe a lot to Raoul Dufy.

 Toulouse-Lautrec and Montmartre
For these artists, the vibrant culture of Montmartre, with its unbridled energy, tawdry behavior, garish colors, and provocative celebrities, was both a way to live and a subject to depict.
The paintings that Lautrec made of the dance halls of Montmartre are among his most complex works.
The Chat Noir became a gathering spot for avant-garde artists, poets, musicians, and writers, who used the cabaret as an artistic laboratory to recite poems, sing songs, and exhibit paintings.

Toulouse-Lautrec and Montmartre was presented at the National Gallery of Art from March 20 to June 12, 2005, and is on view at the Art Institute of Chicago from July 16 to October 10, 2005.

Moulin Rouge Members' Section -- Behind the Story
The Bohemian's anti-establishment mores thrived in Montmartre, whose Butte district was honeycombed with the studios of struggling, long-haired poets, painters, sculptors, musicians and students.
Located right in the heart of artistic Bohemia and Paris' criminal underworld, the establishments of the Montmartre district were perfectly equipped to serve it up...and to fulfill that yen which the French even coined a phrase for, that is 'la nostalgie de la boue' (lit: longing for mud).
Shunning the bourgeois world of their parents generation, the Bohemians plunged into cafe society, leftist ideologies and a drug and alcohol culture that many - notably the legendary poet Rimbaud and his lover Verlaine - saw as the gateway to artistic inspiration and transcendence.
