Born in Paris, Monet was the leading French Impressionist landscape painter.
Monet exhibited in most of the Impressionist exhibitions, beginning in 1874, his painting 'Impression, Sunrise' (Paris, Musée Marmottan) led to the naming of the movement.
After his return to France Monet lived at Argenteuil (1871-8), an industrial town and boating centre on the Seine, which was to draw many other Impressionist painters including Renoir, Sisley, Manet, Pissarro and Caillebotte.
