 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Illuminated Manuscripts
Finally, in the history of art the r=93le of illuminated manuscripts was considerable; by treating in their works scenes of sacred history the manuscript painters inspired other artists, painters, sculptors, goldsmiths, ivory workers, etc.; it is especially in miniature that the ebb and flow of artistic styles during the Middle Ages may be detected.
Scandinavian influences appear in Russian manuscripts (monsters and interlacings of initials); and one of the most remarkable monuments of Slavic miniature painting is the Servian Psalter of Munich, in which the paintings are executed by an impressionistic artist, who uses contrasting colours instead of pen designs.
Despite its limitations, the art of illumination is one of the most charming ever invented; it exacts the same qualifications and produced almost as powerful effects as painting; it even calls for a delicacy of touch all its own.

Medieval manuscripts, Paulus Swaen Old maps Internet Auction, antique maps, globes, atlases.
The collecting of single leaves and cuttings dates back to at least the eighteenth century when many miniatures were separated from their texts to be appreciated and displayed independently as small works of art by celebrated collectors of paintings and drawings.
Because they were expensive and spectacular works of art, the ownership of these manuscripts was limited mainly to royalty, nobility and the very wealthy.
Even textual pieces with minimal painting are highly valued as some of the best examples of the waning art of calligraphy.

 Armenian Miniatures
A comparison of both manuscripts shows that the Anonymous Painter developed some artistic features typical of Grigor Tatevatsi, as well as the evident similarities of miniatures of the Anonymous Painter of Syuniq, especially in the portraits of the evangelists with those of Grigor Tatevatsi.
So far as the manuscript does not contain any indication as to the place where it was created, we reject the name "Grigor of Tatev" accepted by certain scholars and suggest the name "Anonymous Painter of Syuniq".
Accepting this chronological evidence that a department of fine arts functioned at Tatev University, we may suppose that a considerable number of illuminated manuscripts were created there in the XIV - XV centuries and quite probably, Tatev had its own school of miniature painting.

 The World of Illuminated Manuscripts
Illumination of the Qur'an was mainly an art of geometric ornament with vegetal patterns as secondary motifs.
The reason for the chasm between the styles is the fact that Western art is fundamentally pictoral, naturalistic, and representational, and Arabic art is not (James 8).
The ones that had decoration obeyed a very strict design that was characteristic of much of Arabic art; the marginalia were primarily of a geometric nature.

 Manuscript Facsimiles
Up until the end of the Middle Ages, when the art of printing first allowed a measure of mass production, books were made by hand one at a time.
Every manuscript is therefore unique: even when the scribes and artists copied a model text or image, the result is marked by their own taste and training, not to mention the wishes of their patron.
Not all manuscripts were as beautiful as those represented in this exhibit.

The painted and illuminated manuscript is amongst the greatest artistic triumphs of the Middle Ages, demonstrating social, intellectual, religious and cultural attitudes of medieval life.
Illuminated - Decorated with gold, either burnished from gold leaf or painted from finely ground gold paint.

 History of Scriptoria
Even after the triumph of printing, the manuscripts of the scriptoria had their influence.
They were dependent upon the scriptorium work and simple arts and crafts for their revenue, and they found a healthy market of commissions.
Later when the woodcut, metal-cut, and type form served the purpose, printers would employ artists to create woodcut illustrations copying the illuminations of manuscripts.

 History of Illuminated Manuscripts
Manuscript books stating the name of the copyist and exact year of their production exist, but they are the rare exception rather than the rule, as our modern notions of self and time were irrelevant to the Medieval world view.
The works are, generally, attributed by the style of the script and rubrication (ornamentation), which are quite unique to their time and place of origin and can readily be recognized.
The reading of the Holy text was also considered a form of meditation in which the scribe savored Divine wisdom directly from his books, which retained the mystical aura of miraculous objects at this period.

 On Illuminated Manuscripts
Thus, in short, an illuminated manuscript is generally a book created no later then the historical period referred to as the Renassaince, usually hand written and painted.
Illuminated Manuscripts are a particular type of book.
"Illuminated" refers to a type of decoration, "Manuscript" refers to the text--written by hand (but, at this site only, may also include early printed works that have been decorated by hand) and bound as a codex--in book form rather than as a scroll or a collection of leaves.
