The portrait of William, the artist’s son, was inscribed “Willie Jenkins/by his Pa/Bards Town, KY/ Dec. 1867.” The Lincoln portrait was the last to come down.
Her mother threw some of the portraits out and saved six—portraits of William Henry Mann, his wife, his brother, and one of his sons, a portrait of the artist’s son, and one of Abraham Lincoln.
Nor is it likely that his portrait is based on a composite.

As soon as it was issued, this print was accepted as the finest portrait ever done of Lincoln, and in fact was claimed by a number of critics to be one of the finest engravings ever produced.

In 1977 Albert Kaplan purchased the daguerreotype receipted as "Portrait of a Young Man" from an art gallery in New York.
In 1987 Kaplan, then living in Paris, sought out Dr. Claude N. Frechette, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the American Hospital in Paris, whose report "A New Lincoln Image" is here included.
Meserve reported that "Lincoln believed it was made in Washington in 1848".
