The Films of John Woo and the Art of Heroic Bloodshed by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
In those days, his mother would take him to the theater to watch Western cinema, which inspired the young John Woo to be a film-maker.
His directorial debut came in 1973 with "The Young Dragons", a kung-fu actioner that featured two elements of what would later become the John Woo style: the dynamic fluid camera work and the elaborately choreographed action sequences (choreographed by the future Jackie Chan).
Woo was one of Chang's protégés, and along with the other three charges of Chang (Wu Ma and Danny Lee), they came up with this mediocre crime drama that dealt with a younger generation of gangsters dealing with the death of their revered 'Big Boss'.

With Paramount Studios offering him significantly more freedom this time around, Woo set out to craft a complex story of two enemies— a law enforcement agent played by John Travolta and a terrorist played by Nicolas Cage —who embark on a fantastical surgical procedure that allows them to switch faces.
Unfortunately, Woo once again found himself hampered by studio interference and editors who did not share his sense of aesthetics and filming style.
Quentin Tarantino has been quoted in reply to a studio executive who said "I suppose Woo can direct action scenes" as saying "Sure, and Michelangelo can paint ceilings!" When Jean-Claude Van Damme was trying to get Woo for Hard Target he described him as "the Martin Scorcese of Asia".

 cityonfire.com Tiger Cage
Yuen Woo-Ping obviously takes a page from John Woo but clearly departs from Woo's style by not using slow motion and allowing the characters to leave the confines of the warehouse the bust starts in.
It has plenty of martial arts action but it's set during modern times, not ancient China; and while Woo-Ping has tackled the cops and robbers genre before with the "In the Line of Duty" series, none of those films relied on shoot-outs as much as "Tiger Cage" or were as pressingly dark.
This is a dark crime thriller with quality acting as it's strength and is something of a surprise coming from Yuen Woo Ping.

ONCE A THIEF - TV VERSION DVD Review by Dennis A. Amith
The original "Once a Thief" was a movie starring Chow-Yun Fat back in 1991 directed by John Woo.
Of course, I recommend the 1991 version but those of us who watched this on television were hardcore John Woo fans, curious John Woo spectators or someone who had nothing to watch that night.
It was a wonderful movie and at the time "Face Off" and John Woo's name started to become popular in the US (not just among HK movie buffs), the TV networks wanted a John Woo movie they can show on television.
