Ivan Mestrovic, sculptor, was born on August 15, 1883, in Vrpolje in the Sava Valley of Croatia.
In April of the same year Mestrovic exhibited twenty-five pieces of sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, which marked the first time the Museum honored an artist with a one-man show.
His exhibition in the Salon d'Automne attracted the attention of Auguste Rodin who commented that "Mestrovic was the greatest phenomenon among sculptors." In Paris Mestrovic also developed the first designs for the Kossovo monument.

Mestrovic became a member of the Academy of Art an Science in Belgrade and Zagreb, Grand Officer of the Legion d'Honneur in France, bearer of the Cross of St. George in England.

In 1939, Ivan Mestrovic bought the complex (by then badly in need of repair) with the intention of converting this property near his representative palace into a more intimate space to be used for displaying his works.
Even though its style and artistic quality are not uniform, the cycle remains a completed unit in the corpus of Ivan Mestrovic’s work and a unique phenomenon in the Croatian art history.
The whole Christ-inspired cycle, except for the reliefs at the time deposited in Split, was first presented to the public in 1950 in the Hendricks Chapel, College of Fine Arts Syracuse University.

In the fine arts of our time probably the most famous is the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962), who created masterpieces, many of which are dedicated to the history of his motherland.
Some of his paintings are held in the Tate Gallery, the Guggenheim Museum, also in Sarajevo, Ohrid, and in the building of YU government in Belgrade.
In 1928 Mestrovic sent four recommendation letters to his influential friends in Croatia in which he asked to help the Croatian Youth Society BUNJEVAC from the city of Subotica to visit the land of their grandparents - Dalmatia and Herzegovina.
