The Grand French Haute Couture Houses
Haute Couture is the elevated art form of international fashion design.
Every year the eligible haute couture houses are determined by a commission (the 'Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture') that meets at the Ministry of Industry.
When he founded his couture house in 1858 he introduced some important innovations such as showing his dresses on live models, which pleased his clients such as the Empress Eugénie of France (wife of last French Emperor Napoléon III who reigned from 1852-1870) and the Princess Metternich (wife of Austrian diplomat Metternich) immensely.

 Les coulisses de la mode
Haute couture is the art of raising a collar, adjusting the sleeve of a suit or a plunging neckline, to hide a sloping shoulder or admirably emphasise a bustline One of the century's great French designers, Madeleine Vionnet, defined herself as "a physician of the figure".
It allows audacity within tradition." Thus spoke Christian Dior, the inventor of the new look, who caught the essence of haute couture in his dresses: "the art of the well executed, the sense of the accomplished" inseparable from the image of Paris.
Naturally, one could deplore the fact that, today, it is an art whose style is orientated towards the past when its foremost aim is to act as a creative laboratory.

rebecca mead dot com -- Haute Anxiety
Still, the effort to find an ongoing rationale for haute couture is strenuously conducted among fashion people in Paris, which makes for a surreal atmosphere.
It is as if the directors of the world's opera houses were to gather at La Scala twice a year to hear twenty-minute presentations of every major composer's new operatic work, and those works were then supposed to have something to do with the next Spice Girls record.
The main drawback for Grumbach, and a considerable one, is that the president of the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode has no real power--that lies where the money is, with the big fashion houses.

Haute couture - definition of Haute couture in Encyclopedia
Haute couture (French for 'high sewing') is a common term for high fashion as produced in Paris and imitated in other fashion capitals such as New York, London, and Milan.
Sometimes it is used only to refer to French fashion; at other times it refers to any unique stylish design made to order for wealthy and high-status clients.
French leadership in European fashion may perhaps be dated from the 18th century, when the art, architecture, music, and fashions of the French court at Versailles were imitated across Europe.

Fashion History: The Beginning of Haute Couture
While people have been interested in fashion for thousands of years, the industry we know today did not begin to take shape until around 1850.
After hundreds of years of opulent fashions, two things happened concurrently to birth the industry we know as haute couture: the invention of the continuous stitch sewing machine, by Isaac Singer, and the instant popularity of a dressmaker named Charles Frederick Worth.
Prior to 1850, 70% percent of all clothes were hand stitched by the people who wore them.

"Costly Compensations: Postmodern Fashion, Politics, Identity"
As the scare quotes doubtlessly imply, fashion is more than (but also) a matter of personal attitude, posturing, clothing design, and haute couture; it encompasses and impacts collectivities both First and Third World, urbanized and rusticated, disorganized and not; it is part of the contemporary aestheticization of everyday life.
Accordingly, fashion invites allegorical and symptomatic readings, serving as an increasingly significant sociopolitical indicator, which we saw in the cases of Barbie fashion and mass circulation women's fashion magazines; U. hip hop tribes and Guatemalan Maya; youth subcultures and the Madonna phenomenon.
Politics and identity are clothed, so to speak, just as are mass fantasy and negation.
