 Comixfan Forums - CCI 2005 EISNER AWARD WINNERS
This year's Eisner Awards were bestowed to winners at the 2005 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards ceremony, Comic Con International in San Diego, Friday night, July 15.
In terms of total awards, DC Comics came out on top with twelve Eisners (five shared), with Dark Horse Comics coming in second with five (two shared).
Congratulations to Brian K Vaughan he deserves that award, all of his books (except Ultimate X-men) are great.

 Bill Finger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Posthumously, Finger has been named to the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame and Jack Kirby Hall of Fame.
In 2005, the award honored Arnold Drake (creator of the Doom Patrol and fellow uncredited Batman writer), as well as Jerry Siegel who was given a posthumous award.
The award honors lifetime achievements by comic book writers.

The Eisner Awards are named for renowned cartoonist Will Eisner (creator of "The Spirit" and several award-winning graphic novels), who always attends the ceremony to personally hand the trophies to the winners.
The Eisner Awards, established in 1987, came under the auspices of the San Diego Comic Convention, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, in 1990.

Up to now, the major comics awards have been named for the most important creator in comics history, Jack Kirby, and, when that award fell apart, two of the most influential writer/artists, Kurtzman and Will Eisner.
Recognition to Finger aside, naming such an award after him does not set a very high bar for the art of comics writing.
Newsarama has a piece on a new award for lifetime achievment in comics writing named after long-neglected Batman writer Bill Finger.

In July 1964, Bill J. "Biljo" White launched the first fanzine devoted exclusively to one costumed character, coining the term Batmania for its title-no doubt inspired by the Beatlemania that had swept the U.S. earlier in the year.
During the 1960s the cover was ripped off this myth, and it became known that a whole platoon of writers and artists had toiled to produce those memorable tales, and no one had done more for the character of Batman than scripter Bill Finger.

This year's Will Eisner Comic Industry Award nominees, for 2003 publications, are:
Creators with the most nominations were Brian Michael Bendis (up for Best Writer, which he won last year, see " DC, Fantagraphics Dominate Eisner Awards ") and Greg Rucka, with five each.
The 16th annual Eisner Award nominees have been announced, and as usual, there are a number of book format products that represent opportunities for retailers to re-merchandise titles that consumers may have missed.

Night Flight comic store in Lake City, Utah managed by Mimi Cruz and Alan Carroll, won the Will Eisner Retailer of the Year Award.
Not only is Comic Con an excellent place to purchase merchandise and network with other writers and artists, but you can also bear witness to comic book history at the annual Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards.
He passed away earlier this year, and so a large part of this year’s awards ceremony was dedicated in his memory.

DANIEL CLOWES was awarded his umpteenth Eisner in the "Best Single Issue" category for the amazing Eightball #23.
Meanwhile, Publisher's Weekly just announced the nominees for the Graphic Novels and Humor categories in its first annual QUILL AWARDS, and Fantagraphics is pleased as punch to have four nominations overall.
Specifically, Seth took home the "Best Publication Design" award for his work on THE COMPLETE PEANUTS, while Fantagraphics also garnered the "Best Archival Collection/Project" for the series.

Stan is also an award-winning letterer for his work on Sergio Aragones' "Groo the Wanderer," the "Spider-Man" Sunday newspaper strips as well as "Usagi Yojimbo." Stan is the recipient of a Parent's Choice Award, an Inkpot Award, multiple Eisner Awards, and two Spanish Haxtur Awards.
In addition to visiting the Tezuka Museum in Takarazuka, a highlight for Stan was the chorus of young children singing the "Astro Boy Theme" at a 100 year celebration for Tezuka and his studio.
Also while in Japan they made a pilgrimage to Tokugawa Ieyasu's Shrine at Nikko.

Moving into the American comics arena, Bryan's work graced the well known mainstream publications such as, Hellblazer, Sandman, The Nazz and Legends of the Dark Knight, all gaining numerous top level awards in their field, including the Haxtur award, and Harvey award and Eisner award nominations.
The Tale of One Bad Rat, published by Dark Horse in 1995 would go on to win an Eisner Award, a Comic Creators' Guild award, two UK Comic Art awards, two US Comic Buyers' Guide Don Thomson awards and the Internet Comic award for Best Graphic Novel of 1995.

About the only award I haven't presented to Will is the one given in my corner of the cultural shtetl for the past dozen years or so: the prestigious Will Eisner Award for Achievement in Comics (that's because those are given out in San Diego and they'd have to spring for a plane ticket)....
So, thanks to Will Eisner, I have a career: a career as a comics artist in an industry he pioneered, as a storyteller combining words and pictures with a grammar he helped construct but mainly a career as a guy who introduces Will Eisner when he's given awards.
In any case, Will Eisner has been the recipient of the Will Eisner Award at least three or four times and has even — like me — been inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.

The Eisner Awards promoters said, "Come on, Will, you shouldn't have to stand up all this time; here, have a seat." Eisner sat on it briefly, got a laugh out of it, but then he stood up again, and stayed on his feet the rest of the night.
At every Eisner Awards ceremony, each recipient was handed his or her award by the man himself.
His work has inspired many, and the Eisner Award was created in 1988 to honor innovations and achievement in comics.
