 Edit wars - Meta
A quick and dirty solution to the edit war phenomenon would be a software edit war adversaries to plead their cases to a sysop to unprotect any article that has been automatically protected.
The term edit war is a misnomer, but a catchy misnomer that is not likely to be replaced by a more apt term.
And, it makes it difficult for uninvolved users to make edits, since participants in an edit war are unlikely to be careful about merging third-party changes.

Wikipedia:Lamest edit wars ever - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ann Coulter, edit war over whether she was born in 1961 or 1963, settled at 1961 after some damning evidence was found.
Edit war involving three sysops over whether there should be commas in "10000" and "1000." Leads to a blocking and liberal use of the rollback button.
Later in the edit war, no less than two thousand five hundred numbers of debated oddness (every second integer from 1 to 4999) were added and removed, four hundred ninety eight of them repeatedly before the edit war was solved by the article's deletion after a VfD vote.

 Wikitravel:Edit war - Wikitravel
An edit war is when two or more contributors to an article on Wikitravel continuously edit and re-edit the article to get across their point of view.
It is not your job in life to teach the other person in an edit war that they can't get away with their horrible actions.
However, sometimes these conflicts are needed; sometimes we need to figure out an important issue of policy, of style, of whatever, and the edit war triggers that discussion.
