Documenta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The documenta is by most art critiques perceived to be one of the most important art exhibitions in the whole world.
The more recent documentas feature art from all continents; nonetheless most of it is site-specific.
This first documenta was - in contrast to most expectations - a considerable success as it featured most of the artists which are nowadays generally considered to have had a significant influence on modern art, e.g.

Guardian Unlimited The Guardian Arts: Documenta's flawed collection
Documenta's sprawling collection of art from around the globe is as fascinating and flawed as the world it reflects.
Unsurprisingly, Documenta 11 is in part a history lesson, in part an exhibition of current art, and - most importantly - a raising of questions about margins and centre, globalisation, postcolonialism and individual and group efforts to make sense of the world.
Unlike the other biennales, tri-annuals and one-off events that have the denizens of the art world scurrying from Venice to Sydney, from Sao Paulo to Istanbul, Documenta aims to be something more than a ratification of the latest, hottest art.

International Art Tour: Documenta X: Art Page
Since the beginning, Documenta has attempted to reflect what is most current and innovative in art and this last version of the exhibit before the year 2000, organized by French curator Catherine David is no exception.
It is characterized by the triumph of a Capitalist commodity culture celebrated by the media, neo-colonialism, the fading of the nation-state as an expression of popular sovereignty and the emergence of identity groups as locus of conflict around the world.
Film was an important part of the first Documenta and major works in that art form such as Hans Jurgen Syberberg's "Parsifial" have been included in the past.

Documenta 11 reflects not only on "the postcolonial aftermath of globalization and the terrible nearness of distant places" (in Enwezor's words), but on art's ultimate inadequacy within the socio-cultural-political-historical context.
Updating the founder's original intent, which was to bring to post-war Germany the latest developments in modern art from the rest of Europe, Documenta 11 (which continues through September 15) brings to Europe the latest developments from the rest of the struggling, globalizing, postcolonial world.

Documenta 11 declares, in effect, that art is too powerful a force in the world to abide the hedonism of aesthetes and the punctiliousness of art scholars.
Amid the hundreds of works in Documenta 11, an event that trumpets the artistic entropy and civic pep of today's international art institutions, I kept returning to a marvellous video installation—a digital short story, essentially—by the Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila.
I was told that a collector had grumped, apropos of Documenta, "Not much of a shopping trip." In Basel, open wallets had called forth wonderful objects, from Cézanne drawings to the concerted efforts of contemporary artists to make intelligent, lovely things that people can take home.

As I said, this is the Documenta of documentaries, of useful 'art'.
Documenta XI is depressing for three reasons (I am not even counting the curators' ignorance of current new media art).
This Documenta seems to be a message of change to all those who would like to see art as something which represents the so called virtues of the "free west".

Most of the artists and much of the energy at Documenta could be found at the new and very large venue, the Binding-Brauerei.
As big as some of Serra’s steel plate sculpture, the huge free-standing panels were installed outside, their combination of acrylic paint, silicone rubber, computerized printing techniques and advertising photography seemingly impervious to either rational contemplation or the elements.

In 1996 Inside the Visible specified an elliptical history of 20th century art ‘in, of and from the feminine.’ The exhibition covered three historical moments and included varied geo-political generations, orchestrating its chosen practices around the body, materiality, metaphor and language.

Despite Documenta’s curator Okwui Enwezor announcing the end of Eurocentrist era to be his primary goal, one must as well draw attention to the fact that he is not only the first non-European curator of Documenta, but also a New York intellectual with a rapper’s attitude.
Kassel Documenta is commonly compared to the Olympic games, but, being an inhabitant of former Eastern Empire, I remember great all-Union exhibitions held in the USSR, where regional unions of artists struggled fiercely for the right to ‘represent’.
Real horrors still happen out there, on the farthermost border of Oykumena (but the best compliment one can pay to Enwezor is not even his politicized New York intellectual’s attitude, but instead delicate and productive curator’s work).
