Decadence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Decadence, symbolist, and the fin de siècle: a notebook
In literature, Decadence was the name given, first by hostile critics, and then triumphantly adopted by some writers themselves, to a number of late nineteenth century fin de siècle writers who were associated with Symbolism or the Aesthetic movement and who relished artifice over the earlier Romantics' naive view of nature (see Rousseau).

 Literary Encyclopedia: Decadence
For her part, the Decadent woman is a black widow, vampire or succubus that sucks the soul of the Decadent male: the archetypal example is the sadistic Englishwoman Clara, in Octave Mirbeau’s Les jardins des supplices (The Torture-Garden, 1911).
English Decadence was not nearly as defined a phenomenon as that across the Channel, mainly due to the absence of a coherent group of authors who accepted and fought for the title “Decadent”.
Alternatively, the Decadent woman becomes the neurotic, losing her self-control while remaining deadly to men, realising her neuroses in lesbianism, nymphomania, and sadomasochistic perversion.

 ipedia.com: Aestheticism Article
The English decadent writers were deeply influenced by Walter Pater and his essays published in 1867-1868, in which he stated that life had to be lived intensely, following an ideal of beauty.
Decadent writers used the slogan, coined by the philosopher Victor Cousin and promoted by Théophile Gautier; in France, "Art for Art's Sake" (L'art pour l'art) and asserted that there was no connection between art and morality.
The Aesthetic movement is a loosely defined movement in art and literature in later nineteenth century Britain.

English decadent and Symbolist artist Aubrey Beardsley made a lasting contribution to the art of illustration; a satirist with a gift for caricature and grotesquerie, Beardsley attacked Victorian sexual values.
Symbolism, while echoing Decadence both in style and in its association of art with the realm of the mind and the imagination, minimized the seemingly perverse and immoral characteristics of the earlier movement.
Decadence also had an influence in Russia in the early twentieth century, rising within the Russian Symbolist Movement and being influenced primarily by French writing and the works of Poe.

FROM "DECADENCE" TO "STYLE OF DECADENCE" : CALINESCE
The obsession with decadence and the growing circulation of words related to that notion account for a semantic occurrence un paralleled in the first half of the nineteenth century, namely, the formation, from the adjective, of the corresponding homonymous noun: "decadent" (one that is a decadent).
Interestingly, Nisard's arguments—and especially his view that a "decadent style" of art places such emphasis on detail that the normal relationship of a work's parts to its whole is destroyed, the work disintegrating into a multitude of overwrought fragments—have been quite influential, even though the name of their originator has sunk into oblivion.
A style of decadence is simply a style favorable to the unrestricted manifestation of aesthetic individualism, a style that has done away with traditional authoritarian requirements such as unity, hierarchy, objectivity, etc. Decadence thus understood and modernity coincide in their rejection of the tyranny of tradition.

NIETZSCHE ON "DECADENCE" AND "MODERNITY": CALINESCE
Nietzsche's theory of decadence reveals its entire philosophic and aesthetic significance only when, together with his admiration for what Goethe symbolized, the details of his critique of Schopenhauer and Wagner are considered.
The terms decadence and decadent offered Nietzsche the opportunity to synthesize and unify a great many related ideas (decline, degeneration, sickness, etc.) that had become constitutive elements of his dialectic of life against death.
Even within the overwhelmingly decadent context of modernity, Nietzsche recognizes the possibility of a music "that would no longer be of romantic origin, like German music—but Dionysian."76 The first section of The Case of Wagner offers an example: Bizet's Carmen, conceived as an absolute counterpart of Wagnerian decadence.

The end of the war saw Japanese literary and critical writing flourish as writers were essentially free to fill in the void left by the long suppression of writing and ideas that until the end of the war had been demonized as inimical to public morality.
According to Ango they are the exemplars of a new morality subsumed in decadence.
As they were led side by side into the courtroom we discovered a magnificent blueprint for humanity that was made possible by the end of the war; Japan had lost and Bushido had crumbled, but humanity had been born for the first time in the true womb of decadence.

Roman Decadence, Rome and Romania, and the Emperors Who Weren't
It was more than three centuries before a German, a Frank finally, dared to claim the imperial status for himself; and Charlemagne had the excuse of a woman, for the first time, on the throne in Constantinople (Irene, 780-802) and a Pope who was perfectly happy to inflate his own authority into that of emperor-maker.
This is a sexier title; and, since the "young emperors" of the period did include a couple of the more vicious, alarming, and bizarre characters among Roman emperors, Caracalla and Elagabalus, one is not disappointed to read the book for evidence of Roman decadence.
Similarly, another very fine book, by Thomas Sowell, Migrations and Cultures, A World View, published in 1996, states flatly in its section on Jewish history, "the last Roman emperor was overthrown in 476 A.D." [p.
