In 1791, after an attempt by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette to flee France, the jewels of the French Royal Treasury were turned over to the government, but during a week-long looting of the crown jewels in September of 1792, the French Blue diamond was stolen.
During the Second World War, the collection was placed in jam jars and buried in a potato field near Windsor Castle, while the crown jewels were placed in old hat boxes and hidden in a secret passage in the castle.
The royals used the stone in many ways including setting it in the Crown of Louis XV, using it as a hair ornament for Queen Marie and as an adornment in the hat of Marie Antoinette.
