Counterculture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The countercultural years and efforts had their representatives in the sciences, the trades, business, and law, to name only several walks of life (besides in the more obvious career paths of art, design, music, literature, etc.).
In casual practice, the term came to prominence in the general press as it was used to refer to the youth rebellion that swept North America and Western Europe in the 1960s and early 1970s.
But not all attempts to "think outside the box" or blaze new trails were related to the arts.

Conquest of Cool by Thomas Frank, excerpt
The counterculture has long since outlived the enthusiasm of its original participants and become a more or less permanent part of the American scene, a symbolic and musical language for the endless cycles of rebellion and transgression that make up so much of our mass culture.
And while nearly every account of the decade's youth culture describes it as a reaction to the stultifying economic and cultural environment of the postwar years, almost none have noted how that context—the world of business and of middle-class mores—was itself changing during the 1960s.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, leaders of the advertising and menswear businesses developed a critique of their own industries, of over-organization and creative dullness, that had much in common with the critique of mass society which gave rise to the counterculture.

But there is much that is new in the Christian counterculture — an appropriation of mainstream culture’s music, fashion, and rhetoric, all transmuted into the counterculture, and yet a simultaneous, and self-conscious, understanding of themselves as oppositional to the dominant culture’s values.
First, a counterculture should be more than just a taste in music or clothes — it should be a culture, complete with language, style, ideology (or the explicit rejection thereof), identity-definers, and mores of social interaction.
There are ways to identify the ‘reality’ of a membership in a counter-culture, as contrasted with the poseurs who assume the style for some reason or other but are still members of the majority culture at heart; their style and speech seem “weird” to outsiders.
