 TBH, A Brief History
The blues is neither an era in the chronological development of jazz, nor is it actually a particular style of playing or singing jazz.
During the decades of the thirties and forties, the blues spread northward with the migration of many blacks from the South and entered into the repertoire of big-band jazz.
Before the field cry, with its bending of notes, it had not occurred to musicians to explore the area of the blue tonalities on their instruments.

 Jazz History - The Blues
Another Smith — Bessie — (not related) was proclaimed the "Empress of the Blues" based on the prowess of her first recordings in 1923, which contributed some of the lasting masterpieces of the first blues craze.
Blues, passed down from generation to generation through an "oral" tradition, originally acted as a functional music offering African-Americans a vehicle to convey their daily experiences.
W.C. Handy, known as the "Father of the Blues," published his "Memphis Blues" in 1912, becoming the first song to include "blues" in the title.

The Blues . Blues Classroom PBS
As profound as the blues has been to the national music experience, it has only occasionally entered the American classroom, mostly through individual teachers who were committed blues fans and who created their own methods to integrate the music into curricula.
Classroom materials for The Blues have been created with the educational expertise of Experience Music Project and a select group of teachers skilled in the strategies of teaching blues music and culture.
The Blues educational outreach campaign, created by Experience Music Project, provides teaching strategies and resources for teachers to assist in the integration of blues music, culture, and history into American classrooms, with emphasis on grades 9-12.

The Real Chicago Blues, an interview with David Grazian
They only hire authentic-looking blues musicians, who are generally uneducated men afflicted by blindness, or else they walk on a wooden leg or a second-hand crutch; as they are defiantly poor, they drive beat-up Fords and old Chevy trucks and usually cannot read or write their own name.
Also, since the blues has always been characterized as the music of poor people, it therefore did not resonate with upwardly mobile black audiences the way that more contemporary urban soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz music could.
Handy's "discovery" of the blues in 1903 does not exactly mark the beginning of the blues; it marks its shift away from an oral tradition and its subsequent commercialization through the distribution of written sheet music.

 BLUES-L FAQ
Many of our contributors resent Clapton’s enormous popularity and material rewards when more deserving black artists are not recognized, have been cheated out of royalties and other moneys due them, and in general have been forced to live itinerant lives eking out a meagre living by playing their heart-felt music.
In the middle are those that say, yes, Clapton is a good blues guitarist, but are disappointed in From the Cradle: it is too derivative, merely covering arrangements originated by other black performers, and not adding anything to the genre.
Handy appears to have been the first to “compose” blues songs (“Memphis Blue” in 1912, etc.).
