Pentrace Article #022502_159 Writing Equipment Society meeting in Birmingham
The day was divided into two sessions, a presentation on British "own-brand" pens in the morning at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Gallery 4 and a tour of the BPTHA (Birmingham Pen Trade Heritage Association) Pen Room, with an informal trading session in between.
The pen trade in Birmingham (specifically the manufacture of steel nibs) was a thriving industry from the eighteen hundreds to the nineteen fifties, when competition from the ballpoint pen led to it's decline.
Anyone visiting Birmingham should make it a point to visit the Pen Room, you won't be disappointed!

 The Landscape Artist Catherine Ogden
After selling a few paintings in local exhibitions for a few years I decided to try my luck in London, and as many paintings were on the small side someone suggested I send my work to the Royal Society Of Miniature Painters.
My paintings have received commendations and awards from a number of societies and a major London Gallery.
I have always enjoyed painting and drawing but it wasn't until the 80's that I took up the challenge of trying to earn a living as an artist.

SwindonWeb - Guide to Swindon - Swindon People - Desmond Morris
Despite a growing reputation as a surrealist artist and his first one-man show - at Swindon Library - Desmond Morris renewed his love affair with the natural world by becoming a student of zoology at Birmingham University.
But his art had not been abandoned and a shared exhibition with the renowned surrealist painter Joan Miro in London in 1950 confirmed his place as a noted modern artist.
Now firmly established in four fields - broadcaster, artist, author and academic - Desmond may have appeared to have reached the peak of his career - but his international reputation was to be enhanced still further in the following twenty years.
